What “GSM” means

GSM is grams per square metre — the weight of the felt per unit area. For felt it is the single most useful number, because it tracks closely with density, firmness and durability.

Matching GSM to the mattress

  • Insulating layer over springs — a medium GSM felt that stops the springs being felt through the surface and distributes load.
  • Firmer or orthopaedic builds — a higher GSM, higher-density felt adds support and helps the mattress hold its shape longer.
  • Economy builds — a lighter felt that still insulates the spring unit at lower cost.

Beyond GSM

GSM is the headline, but thickness, density and width all matter and are all made to order at Tulsi Overseas. The best approach is to tell us the mattress type, the firmness you want and the warranty you are targeting — and we will recommend the felt specification to match.

Tulsi Overseas manufactures mattress felt in any GSM, width and thickness. Share your build and we will match the right felt.

Frequently asked questions

What GSM of felt is used in mattresses?
Mattress felt is made to order, so there is no single number — lighter felts are used as thin insulators while heavier, high-density felts add firmness and durability. The right GSM depends on the mattress type, target firmness and warranty.
Does higher GSM mean a better mattress?
Not always. Higher GSM adds firmness, support and durability, but the right choice balances firmness, weight and cost for your specific product. The goal is the correct GSM, not the highest.
