In a quality mattress, non-woven felt is the insulating layer between the springs and the comfort foam. It is the component you never see but always feel the benefit of.

A typical pocketed-spring mattress is built up like this:

Why felt, and not just foam?
The felt layer insulates the springs (so you don’t feel them), distributes load, reduces spring noise, and stabilises the mattress so it holds its shape. The same principle applies to bonnel-spring and foam mattresses.

- Felt sits as the insulating layer directly above and below the spring core, under the foam and quilt. In a typical pocketed-spring mattress the stack is quilt → memory foam → felt insulating layer → pocketed spring core → felt insulating layer → high-density foam → base.
- Which mattress types use felt?
- Bonnel-spring, pocketed-spring and foam mattresses all use felt. In spring mattresses it insulates the springs; in foam mattresses it adds support and stability.
- What does the felt layer actually do?
- It stops the springs being felt through the surface, distributes body load evenly, dampens noise from the springs, and helps the mattress keep its shape and firmness over years of use.
